Cover shots are not included as a gang print option, as these increase the number of versions and the overall cost. Cover shots may be lasered (no cost) or printed by MDI. Procedures are outlined below.

Detailed Information

Cover shots are not normally included as a gang print option for a number of reasons, first of which is an increase in versions, which increases overall cost.

Second, covers and logos quickly become dated - more often than not the covers become obsolete before anyone gets around to using the stock.

Finally, as the quantity is ordered in advance of the mail date, it is almost impossible to eliminate waste. The number needed is almost always MORE or LESS than what is available. This results in last minute print runs of cover shot stock, or small leftover amounts that can be used for nothing else without incurring additional "version" charges from MDI. Obsolete cover shot stock must be trashed, and is a waste of money.

Typically, cover shots are post-printed at the time of mailing. This is done via the Work Order. MDI sends the jobs out to be post-printed with the cover shot. Each project is individually quoted and the cost is high but cheaper to the department in the long run than thousands of wasted pieces of stock.

Cover shots may be lasered at no additional cost - just make a note on the Work Order to the promotions department. Lasering is riskier in quality than printed cover shots, and the cover used must be selected with care.

If you are interested in cover shots as part of your gang print order, please see me individually to discuss. It will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
